Rumney V Bridgend Athletic Match Report

A blustery afternoon saw Rumney host their league game against Bridgend Athletic. The wind was driving directly across the pitch so wasn't an advantage to either team.

Rumney started this game in a spritely manner and this resulted in an early try for Tyler Mahoney whose strong run from fullback saw him evade several defenders.

The Rumney pack continued where they left off from last week and got the advantage at the early scrums. The Front Row of Rob Rowley, Harry Jarret and Joe Brown and second rows Michael Young and Tom Rogers showing their combined strength at the scrum which resulted in a penalty where Regan Mahoney slotted it over. Score 10-0

Despite the home sides great start to the game, Bridgend Athletic started to creep their way into the game and were playing the game in Rumney's half whilst holding a lot of possession. Rumney's defence was tested on a number of occasions and the midfield of Tom Maton and Luke Fear and back three of Solomon Mathews, Tyler Mahoney and Joe Morgan worked tirelessly to keep the Athletic team from scoring. The back row of Lewis Hill, Lewis Mills and Owen Jones were instrumental in turning the ball over at key moments

Eventually, Bridgend Ath had thrown everything against the determined defence and their persistence paid off when they scored from close quarters. 10-7.

After the re-start with the ball deep into Bridgend Athletic, the ball was spilt over. Tom Maton wasted no time in scooping the ball up and darted over the try line. The conversion was missed. The score 15-7 at halftime.

After the break, Bridgend Athletic started the stronger team and came out the blocks determined to throw everything at the Rumney defence. The increased pressure resulted in penalties for the away team and they slotted two early attempts to make the score 15-13.

The Rumney Coaches started to introduce their replacements. Wayne DaCruz slotted into the centre and Luke Fear moved onto the wing. Marley Lovell and Josh Dean also entered the field. All replacement slotted straight into the tempo of the game and all had an influence in the second half. Half-backs Morgan Williams and Regan Mahoney controlled the game.

A passage of play deep into the Athletic half saw great fast hands between forwards and backs which eventually landed to Tyler Mahoney. he chipped the ball ahead and managed to regain his own kick to score just by the posts. The conversion by his brother Regan was successful and the game remained at 22-13 until full time.

Matthew Williams, First Team Back Coach: "A tough encounter against a very good Bridgend Athletic team. A tough decision on the man of the match where Tyler Mahoney shone but it was decided that Harry Jarret just deserved the award today"
